There’s something incredibly rewarding about getting your hands dirty and helping out a good cause. This past week, I had the immense pleasure of spending a day at the beautiful Bay Tropics, a visit that was not only productive but also incredibly enriching. This endeavor was a fantastic collaboration between Bay Tropics and the Vector Group Charitable Trust, showcasing the power of shared vision and passion for plants.
Our main mission for the day? To give some much-needed love to the tamarillo trees. If you’ve never seen a tamarillo tree, they’re quite striking, and the fruit itself is a vibrant, egg-shaped delight. Pruning these trees is crucial for their health and for maximizing their fruit yield, ensuring a bountiful harvest for future projects. We carefully snipped away dead branches, opened up the canopy for better airflow and sunlight, and generally tidied them up. It was satisfying work, seeing the trees transform and knowing we were contributing to their well-being.
And what’s a day of hard work without a little reward? As a bonus for our efforts, we were able to gather some of the ripe tamarillo fruit ourselves! These beauties are destined to be part of some very exciting upcoming projects – watch this space for more details, as I can promise some truly unique and delicious creations are in the pipeline.
But the tamarillos weren’t the only stars of the show. Bay Tropics is a treasure trove of incredible produce, and I couldn’t help but be absolutely captivated by the “whopper” passionfruit we encountered. Seriously, these weren’t your average passionfruit; they were massive, bursting with fragrant pulp, and just begging to be turned into something delicious. The aroma alone was enough to transport you to a tropical paradise.
