The sun was shining bright in Te Puke, and the air was filled with the sounds of hard work and community spirit. The Vector Group Charitable Trust, along with a team of dedicated volunteers, spent a productive morning at Giggles Early Learning, getting their mara kai (edible garden) ready for the new season.
The mission was clear: revitalize the garden to ensure it continues to be a bountiful and educational space for the tamariki (children). The day’s main tasks included some serious pruning and a bit of tree surgery! Volunteers got their hands dirty trimming the feijoa trees, ensuring they have the best possible chance for new growth and a heavy crop in the coming months.
The biggest challenge of the day was tackling a problematic peach tree that had seen better days. With teamwork and careful planning, the volunteers successfully removed the tree, creating a new space for more productive plants to flourish. The entire Giggles Early Learning family was there, with owners Shona and her husband leading the way and their own children pitching in to learn about the importance of sustainable gardening.
A huge thank you goes out to all the volunteers who showed up and worked tirelessly. Your energy and passion are what make Te Puke such a special place. Special shout-outs are also due to AJ from Te Puke Landscape Supplies for their support and contribution to the project, and to Hireworks for supplying the essential chipper and chainsaw that made the job possible.
This collaborative effort is a perfect example of the Trust’s vision in action—building a stronger, more connected community where everyone can thrive. The mara kai at Giggles is more than just a garden; it’s a living classroom that teaches our youngest residents about where their food comes from and the importance of working together. We look forward to seeing the fruits (and feijoas!) of their labor in the coming seasons!
