Welcome Bay Community Spirit Shines at “Sirens and Services” Event

Despite a steady drizzle, Welcome Bay Community Hall was buzzing for Sirens and Services: Koha Ice Cream Day. The weather could not dampen the mood — families turned out in force, and the hall was full of warmth, learning, and connection.

The event ran 1–4pm and was a real success. Thank you to Rebecca Larsen, event organiser, and the Western Bay of Plenty Neighbourhood Support team for a brilliant afternoon in support of the Welcome Bay Community Centre.

A focus on safety and security

The Safety & Security Expo brought together community organisations and businesses. Attendees learned about home security, alarm systems, and scam awareness, and met local police, fire, and ambulance services. Many discovered support networks available right here in Welcome Bay.

A highlight for tamariki was the Learn and Earn passport — visiting stalls, collecting stamps, and earning safety knowledge. The reward: a free ice cream. A simple, effective way to make safety fun.

More than just an event

Beyond the expo, the afternoon was a celebration: entertainment for children, spot prizes, and time to connect with the people and services that keep our communities safe.

Generosity was on display too, with families bringing non-perishable food for the Welcome Bay Community Centre — true koha, and a reminder of how strong local networks are across the Bay of Plenty.

Sirens and Services was community engagement in action. Even in the rain, the hall was a beacon of warmth. We are already looking forward to the next one.
